  1. Genuine Vinyl LP Album. EX Excellent condition, no noticeable marks and like new. Often records which we grade as EX look as they have never been played - but we don't know for sure. EX- Close to Excellent condition, usually we use EX- if there are light brush marks visible under our spotlight.

  5. This is the third Dorothy Ashby album I've featured, and the earliest - dating from and released on New Jazz from Prestige. Engineered by Blue Note's Rudy van Gelder, this small group album features the flute of Frank Wess. Wess was also a saxophonist, and had a 10 year stint with Count Basie's orchestra on tenor and flute.
  6. Following in the tracks of another funky flute player, Herbie Mann, Frank Wess heads south, and records an album of tunes that mix his jazzy flute with the hipper funky styles of the early 70s southern studio scene. Despite the title, this one was actually recorded at Muscle Shoals, not Memphis, but it was handled by Don Davis, and has all the best elements of early 70s Stax backing in the mix.
  7. Frank Wess tries to join the funky flute crowd of the 70's by joining forces with a Muscle Shoals group of rhythm players to reach a deep Stax-like instrumental sound. It almost works, but not entirely, because the overall sound is pretty soft. The record's nice and cheap, so you can decide for yourself how the session came out.
